In an interview with the New York Times, Meyer admits that ‘the experience of writing this book was not a super pleasant one.’ The Twilight author claims that ‘every single word was a struggle’. One would think 12 years is long enough to scrap a stagnant project. It is easy to see why it would take so long (we practically hear about every calorie consumed by Bella throughout) but also baffling. 12 years later, she announced its release.

Early chapters of the book were leaked in 2008, prompting Meyer to put the project on hold. However, Midnight Sun has been a long time coming. This only makes me question why Meyer did not write a companion novel about Alice? Occasionally this is interesting, but mostly only when he ‘listens’ to Alice’s future predictions. The difference to the original, aside from the length, is that the book provides access to Edward’s thoughts and thought-reading abilities. Rewatching the films for a bit of a laugh is one thing, but the Midnight Sun audiobook lasts a whopping 26 hours. Sadly this didn’t last very long (certainly not in comparison to the time it took to read).

To begin with I had a rush of nostalgia as I remembered my young teenage Twihard self. It reads rather like Twilight fanfiction written by a 13 year old. The novel is horrendously overwritten, and almost every scene takes longer to read than it would have done to live through. Despite reading it in isolation, with nothing better to do, I struggled to get to the end. I also opted for the e-version to disguise my embarrassment. I read it on a Kindle to save my arms as, at 750 pages in hardback, it is a hefty tome. It would be a waste of time for me to outline the premise because there is absolutely nothing new to tell.

Midnight Sun will be a 750,000 first printing, available in all formats.Midnight Sun is a retelling of the first Twilight book from Edward’s perspective, and it’s been pitched as a Twilight ‘companion’ novel. Midnight Sun allows that to happen again - and it will likely further propel vampire stories to the forefront in YA, this time with more inclusive characters and authors at the helm.

The Twilight series was written for teen readers, and while it found significant fandom in the adult community–including, of course, the publication of Fifty Shades of Grey, a sexually-explicit fan fiction inspired by the series - the book provides ample space for the melodrama and romantic longings many teen readers enjoy (and may relate to). It’s allowed them to reconsider the power of the series, as well as its lasting effects on the YA industry as a whole. In recent years, especially as vampires have come back into style in YA, many readers are finding themselves revisiting Twilight. Likewise, Meyer has been an advocate for female-led stories, producing and funding the development of projects aimed at female audiences. Though there are valid criticisms to be made about the series, including its treatment of Native people and uncomfortably-close-to-abusive interactions between Bella and Edward, sexism certainly has aided in the dogging of a book that propelled YA publishing into yet another golden era - one which offered a stage for female characters and authors to find success, as well as helped create the financial stability to offer more space to mid-list YA books.

Meyer’s books have been maligned frequently, as well as challenged and belittled by both young readers and adults looking down upon books for young readers. In Midnight Sun, Stephenie Meyer transports us back to a world that has captivated millions of readers and brings us an epic novel about the profound pleasures and devastating consequences of immortal love.” How can he justify following his heart if it means leading Bella into danger? As we learn more fascinating details about Edward’s past and the complexity of his inner thoughts, we understand why this is the defining struggle of his life. Meeting Bella is both the most unnerving and intriguing event he has experienced in all his years as a vampire. This unforgettable tale as told through Edward’s eyes takes on a new and decidedly dark twist. At last, readers can experience Edward’s version in the long-awaited companion novel, Midnight Sun. But until now, fans have heard only Bella’s side of the story. “When Edward Cullen and Bella Swan met in Twilight, an iconic love story was born. Here’s the official description of Midnight Sun: It makes perfect sense she’d use the book’s adolescence to release the book many have hoped would see the light of day. To celebrate the book’s 10th anniversary, Meyer published Life and Death, a gender-swapped retelling of the initial novel, packaged with a republication of Twilight itself.
